Day 2 - May 23, 2017 - First Time Oil Painting

Today's daily painting is this yellow flower I painted from life. One of the flowers from the bouquet my boyfriend and I got my mom for Mother's Day last week. 6 x 6" on canvas panel. My first time oil painting! (well, not counting that one time I tried it out 7 years ago, went in way over my head with a huge canvas, kinda failed, and never got back to it)

It's definitely a different experience, after using only watercolor the past couple years that I've been getting back into painting as a hobby. Trying to learn more about the mediums and things to use with it. I mixed mineral spirits and linseed oil to thin the paint. Seemed to do the trick.

The only downside is the slow drying time. I painted this in the morning, and it's still wet right now. Didn't want to start handling it to take listing photos until it's dry. I'll come back and edit this post once it's ready and listed, with the link to purchase the painting.

So far I'm loving this small painting daily challenge. It's allowing me to explore new subjects, which is great because my brain is always brimming with new ideas that never come to fruition because I get overwhelmed. I like that I can take a more laid back approach with these small paintings. If something doesn't work, at least I can blog about it to record where I went wrong and what I learned, then try again the next day.

This painting took me about 2-3 hours. That's probably pretty slow, but working with a new medium I think it should be expected to take one's time and get a feel for it. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it with time. Already looking forward to painting again tomorrow!
